STOPSTORM is a European study on the use of radiotherapy for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. In particular, it focuses on patients who suffer from “ventricular tachycardia”, i.e. fibrillation of the ventricles. Currently, these patients are first treated with medication or an implanted defibrillator. If their symptoms persist, invasive catheter ablation is used to locally damage heart tissue in order to remove the disorder.
Treatment with radiation, that does not require surgery, can be a breakthrough for patients with ventricular tachycardia, by improving quality of life and extending survival. The treatment consists of a single high dose of radiation and has already been offered by several institutions since 2014. However, unfortunately the outcomes of these treatments have not been well documented and this hampers further and wider application. Therefore, in the STOPSTORM project a large dataset of treatment results is being compiled, which enables detailed investigation into the efficacy, safety, and required dosage of the treatment.
