Selected projects third round Innovation Fund Large Scale announced
Yesterday, Thursday 13 July, it was announced which applications from the third round of the Innovation Fund – Large Scale projects were selected. Of the 239 applications, 41 large innovative sustainability projects will be awarded with a grant. The EC made more than € 3.6 billion in funding available for these projects. The awarded projects focus on reducing CO2 emissions, industrial electrification & hydrogen and developing ‘clean-tech’ such as hydrogen production or battery production (and recycling). In total, these projects can prevent approximately 221 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in the first 10 years after realisation. We are proud to have contributed to this!
An overview of the awarded projects
Reducing CO2 emissions (€1.4 billion, 8 projects)
The projects are from refineries (3) and the cement/lime industry (5). These projects are located in Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden.
Industrial electrification and hydrogen (€1.2 billion, 13 projects)
These are 6 projects for hydrogen production, and 7 projects for hydrogen use in various sectors (chemical industry, refineries and steel industry). These projects are located in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Norway.
Clean-tech developments (€800 million, 11 projects)
These are projects aimed at developing new clean-tech. 4 projects focus on developing electrolysers, 4 projects on developing batteries and 3 projects on producing solar cells and modules. These projects are located in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Spain, Sweden and Norway.
‘Mid-sized pilots’ (€250 million, 9 projects)
The last category of projects includes innovative projects for wind energy, ocean energy, chemical innovations and projects in the glass industry, Carbon Capture (CO2 storage) and e-fuels. These projects are located in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Norway.
Making impact with the Innovation Fund
The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest programmes for demonstrating innovative energy technologies. These are huge projects that can actually make a difference to the global warming. To have contributed to this again as a grant advisor gives us a lot of energy! We are therefore very excited that a number of our projects have been awarded within this third round.
