New RFCS 2025 call open for applications
A new call for applications was opened under the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). This call allows universities, research centres, and companies to invest in research and innovation projects related to the coal and steel sectors. Applications for RFCS grant can be submitted from 4 February 2025 until 6 May 2025.
Which projects are eligible?
Grants are available for large research and innovation projects focused on clean steel production, aiming to achieve near-zero carbon emissions in steel manufacturing by 2030. Additionally, research projects in the coal sector that contribute to a just transition for former coal mines, or coal mines undergoing closure, and their infrastructure are also eligible for RFCS funding. Projects must focus on one of the following areas:
- Steel production processes
- Optimised use and conservation of resources, energy efficiency, and improved industrial efficiency
- Workplace health and safety
- Environmental protection
- Technologies supporting coal regions in transition
- Emission reduction in steel production
Grant budget
For the 2025 calls, a grant budget of € 175 million has been allocated to promote joint research within the coal and steel industries. This budget is divided across two main calls:
- ‘Big Tickets’: € 100 million for steel projects and € 35 million for coal projects (from 4 February 2025 to 6 May 2025)
- Standard annual call: € 40 million for both coal and steel projects (opening in June 2025)
