Learn everything you need to know about Horizon Europe RIA and IA
Horizon Europe funds different types of collaborative projects. The research and innovation action (RIA) is one of them. RIA allows the exploration of new technologies, methods, projects, services or solutions or the improvement of existing ones, whereas Innovation Actions (IAs) are directly aimed at producing plans and arrangements or designs for new, altered or improved products, processes or services. These are generally projects that are close-to-market with the goal of commercialisation soon after a project is concluded.
What is the difference between RIAs and IAs?
Technology Readiness Level
The main difference is the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). A RIA project is expected to have an outcome with TRL 2 to 6. The usually results in a functional prototype. IA is intended for higher TRLs: between 6 and 8.
The funding rate
Another primary difference is the funding rate. For RIA projects the funding rate Is 100% of the eligible costs for all types of organisations. For IA projects this may be lower depending on the legal status of the institutions. For profit-making legal entities, the funding rate is 70%. For non-profit legal entities this is 100%.
What you need to know about a RIA or IA project
RIA and IA projects typically have a budget of € 4 million to € 15 million per project. The duration of a project is 36 to 48 months. The eligible costs include:
- Equipment;
- Consumables;
- personal costs;
- travel and dissemination costs.
Who is eligible for funding?
Organisations from EU member states, associated third countries or other third countries are eligible. A consortium must consist of at least three partners from an EU member state or associated country. The project must also be coordinated by a partner from one of these types of countries. Partners from other third countries cannot act as coordinator.
Organisations from non-eligible countries can also participate as associated partners. However, they must have their own budget. Also, they cannot declare any costs. In this case, they may be eligible for national funding.
