Interreg | Opportunities for researchers
INTERREG is one of the oldest grant opportunities in Europe. It was founded in 1990 to stimulate cooperation between European regions and to reduce regional disparities and enhance research performance. The core of a good INTERREG proposal revolves around cooperation, either by crossing borders, transnational cooperation or interregional cooperation. The total budget for 2014-2020 is € 2.2 billion.
Research projects for a stronger Europe
There are multiple INTERREG programmes, of which a few are interesting for researchers or enterprises from, or in cooperation with partners in, The Netherlands:
- INTERREG Belgium-Netherlands
- INTERREG Germany-Netherlands
- INTERREG France – Belgium – United Kingdom – Netherlands (2 Seas)
- INTERREG Belgium – Germany – Netherlands
- INTERREG North West Europe (NWE)
- INTERREG North Sea Region (NSR)
Within these programmes, researchers, governments and enterprises cooperate to enhance innovation, research, sustainable energy, climate adaptation and transport. Multiple projects within the field of Life Sciences have been approved, demonstrating that INTERREG is a significant financing mechanism for top-of-the-bill research and innovation projects.
Two-step application approach
Interested in applying for INTERREG? A two-step approach must be taken into account. The first step consists of a relative ‘light’ application that describes the partnership and the overall project idea. The consortium may still be ‘work in progress’. After approval of the step-1 application, a full application including work packages and a finalized consortium overview must be submitted.
