The SESAR programme (Single European Sky ATM Research) is the technological pillar of the Single European Sky policy and plays a key role in the European Commission’s sustainable and smart mobility strategy. It focuses on developing and implementing technologies to transform European air traffic management.
SESAR 3 JU Programme (2021-2031)
With the SESAR programme, the European Commission aims to use research and innovation to accelerate the realisation of a digital European airspace by developing and implementing new or improved technologies. The current SESAR 3 JU (SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking) programme runs from 2021 to 2031, with an additional four years to complete the activities outlined in the work programme.
SESAR 3 JU Project Types
Promising ideas that contribute to improving European air traffic management can benefit from the SESAR initiative. These ideas are explored to move to the next operational stage. By bringing together different resources, parties, and expertise from the aviation sector, advanced technological solutions can be developed to manage aircraft, drones, air taxis, and higher-altitude vehicles. The programme consists of four pillars:
- Exploratory research
- Industrial research and validation
- Digital sky demonstrators
- Fast track innovation and uptake
Exploratory Research
Here, new concepts are explored that go beyond those in the European ATM master plan or emerging technologies and methods.
Industrial Research and Validation
This phase assesses and validates technical and operational concepts in simulated and real operational environments, turning concepts into SESAR solutions.
Digital Sky Demonstrations
SESAR solutions are tested on a larger scale and in real-world operations.
Fast Track Innovation and Uptake
This accelerates the development of high-risk, high-reward projects with the aim of reducing the time it takes to bring groundbreaking and highly innovative solutions to market.
SESAR Budgets
The SESAR 3 JU (2021-2031) programme is co-financed by the European Union through the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme:
- Horizon Europe: €600 million
- Eurocontrol: up to €500 million
- Industry: at least €500 million
Additionally, demonstration projects within the Digital European Sky programme are partly funded through the CEF programme, with a total of €200 million.
