Grants for universities & knowledge institutions
The Netherlands has a good number of leading universities, knowledge institutions and research organizations. Scientists conduct research to create solutions regarding major social issues, for example in the following sectors: healthcare, chemistry, sustainability, ICT and high tech. National grants
At the national level, grants are available for research projects. The main grant provider is the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). But for research projects, there are also grants from the Netherlands Agency for Entrepreneurship (RVO). There are also sector-specific grant providers, such as ZonMw for healthcare or Top Sector Energy for energy transition and sustainability.
European subsidies
From Brussels, numerous grants are provided to universities and scientists every year. Horizon Europe is the EU’s main programme for research and innovation, with as much as € 95.5 billion in grants available till 2027. The Marie Curie Actions (part of Horizon Europe) fund excellent research and innovation by researchers in Europe. Then there are ERC grants, personal awards for researchers at different stages of their research careers.
